A ScreenZen alternative, and why free may already be enough

By Juhyun NamUpdated August 2026

ScreenZen costs nothing. Its own site says so plainly, and it is funded by donations rather than a subscription. That makes this an awkward page to write, because the first honest question is not which tool is better built. It is why anybody would pay us instead. This page answers that, and for many readers the answer is that you would not.

The short version: ScreenZen puts something in front of the app and asks you to wait. snowscroll changes what is inside six social apps once you are already in. If money is the constraint, install ScreenZen today and stop reading here.

What ScreenZen actually is

ScreenZen shows an intervention screen before you open an app you have flagged. Its App Store listing describes "Breathing and other activities to encourage you not to need to open the app while waiting for it to unlock", and it offers stricter blocking if a pause is not enough. Its site states iOS, macOS, Windows and Android.

On money it leaves no ambiguity. Its site states "ScreenZen is completely free. You can always support the project with a small donation if you'd like to help it grow", and calls itself "the only donation-supported screen time app". Checked 30 August 2026.

That is not a trial, not a free tier and not a cut-down edition. In a category where 51.3% of the 692 iOS app descriptions we surveyed the same day mentioned a subscription or premium tier, a serious tool that is simply free is unusual.

What free actually gets you here

We would point people at it in all of these cases, and the first carries the weight.

  • Cost is the constraint. It costs nothing, across four platforms, with no upgrade waiting at the end. No version of our answer beats free. If a subscription would be a real strain, start here and quite possibly stop here.
  • You are not only on an iPhone. Its site lists macOS, Windows and Android. We have no desktop product, no Android build, and a waitlist that carries no date.
  • The app is open before you chose to open it. If your hand moves first and the decision follows, the moment worth interrupting is the choosing. Emptying a feed does nothing about a reflex; it only changes what the reflex arrives at.
  • What eats your day sits outside our six apps. ScreenZen can be pointed at anything on the phone. We cover Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X, TikTok and LinkedIn, and no more.
  • You want something to do while you wait. The breathing and other activities are the mechanism, not decoration. We have nothing comparable, because we have no wait.

Where a pause-first tool runs out

None of this criticises a free tool many people rely on. It is what friction is, and what it cannot reach.

The pause ends and nothing behind it has changed. An intervention screen buys a moment to reconsider, which is valuable. But go through it and the app on the other side is exactly the app. If your lost hour begins after a deliberate opening, the intervention did its job and the hour goes anyway.

Repetition wears a pause thin. Anything you meet twenty times a day risks becoming part of the sequence rather than a break in it. Some people stay sensitive for years. Others tap straight through by week three. You find out quickly, and it is not about character.

Strict mode is a whole-app rule. Turn it on for Instagram and the conversation you were having goes quiet along with the recommendations, because the unit being blocked is the app. That is inherent to blocking by app.

There is no catch in the price. The free part is not the trade-off. The trade-off is the level it acts on: the threshold, not the contents.

The part ScreenZen does not attempt

snowscroll is an iPhone browser. Load any of Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X, TikTok or LinkedIn through it and there is no Reels tab, no Shorts shelf, no Explore grid and no For You. Everything else stays: messages, search, the notifications tab, your profile and the accounts you follow. There is no waiting screen, no breathing exercise and nothing to tap through, because with the endless surface gone there is nothing left to be protected from.

All of it happens on the device. No account, no server, nothing about your logins or conversations leaving the phone.

Now the money, checked 30 August 2026. The free tier gives you two apps, greyscale, trends and one limit across everything. Pro is $4.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $69.99 once, and everybody gets seven days of Pro up front without a card.

Why we charge for something ScreenZen gives away

We charge because a small team keeping six web integrations working against six companies that redesign whenever they please needs an income. We have no other business model: no ads and no data to sell, because everything runs on your device and we never see it.

That is our reason, not yours. Yours is narrower. You would pay us only if the pause has already failed you, and only if the six services we cover are the ones taking your hours. If the pause is working, or your problem lives outside those six, paying us buys nothing you do not have. We would rather say that than take a subscription from somebody we cannot help.

Stay with ScreenZen if any of this fits

  • Money is a genuine constraint. That is sufficient.
  • A desktop is half of where your hours go.
  • You open apps before you have decided to.
  • The apps costing you time are not among our six.
  • The pause is working. Nothing here is a reason to replace something that works.

If one of those describes you, the answer is no and we have saved you a subscription. If you want a stop you cannot undo from where you sit, neither of us is it, and a one-time purchase you keep in another room is the shape to consider. If the feed is the problem and you want the option most people have tried, the largest app doing roughly what we do is worth checking first.

Common questions

Is snowscroll a replacement for ScreenZen?

No. The two act at different moments and on different things. ScreenZen meets you before an app opens; snowscroll changes what is inside six of them once you are there. If ScreenZen is holding your attention where you want it, replacing it with us would remove the part that was working.

Why would I pay for snowscroll when ScreenZen is free?

For a lot of people you would not, and we would rather write that than sell you something. The only good reason to pay us is that your problem is the surface rather than the opening: you go in on purpose, the pause lets you through as designed, and forty minutes disappear anyway. If that is not your pattern, free already covers you.

Can I run both at once?

Yes, and they layer sensibly, because one acts before an app opens and the other acts inside it. If you want the pause on the way into snowscroll as well, add snowscroll to the list of apps ScreenZen watches.

Is snowscroll free?

Partly. The free tier covers two apps, greyscale, trends and one limit across everything, and everyone gets seven days of Pro without a card. After that Pro is $4.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $69.99 once, checked on 30 August 2026. Free to try, and free to keep in reduced form, is not the same as free.

When the pause is not the part that is failing

If the pause lets you through exactly as it should and the evening goes anyway, what is worth changing is what waits on the other side. Two apps free.

Keep going

For the mechanics, read how a feed-level tool actually behaves. For everything at once, there is the wider field, free options included, and the method in how we counted the apps in this category. If you do spend, the numbers behind our paid tier are public, and so are the honest limits of a browser-based approach.
