I keep turning my blocker off

511 of the 692 iPhone screen-time apps we catalogued hold a whole app shut, and every one of them has a lid you can lift, because the rule is one you set on yourself. You installed it and set it up properly. Four days later you were in Settings switching it off, or deleting it, or granting yourself another fifteen minutes for the sixth time that evening. The tool worked exactly as designed and you defeated it anyway. That is a specific failure, it has a specific answer, and the answer is usually not us.

If the tool has an off switch and you are reliably the person who reaches it, buy one whose unlock is not a switch. snowscroll reroutes a tap, it does not refuse one, which means for this failure we are frequently the wrong purchase. Almost every product named below is somebody else's.

Why we are putting that at the top

snowscroll asks for Screen Time permission during setup and ships Family Controls extensions, so its shield can catch a habitual tap on one of six social apps and land you in snowscroll with the feeds already gone. That is a reroute: you still arrive, just somewhere without an endless surface. And like every consumer tool here, the shield is configured by you, on your phone, with no second party holding a key.

That design is fine when the thing beating you is the surface. It is not enough pressure when the thing beating you is the moment you decide to beat the tool. For that, the unlock needs to cost something a thumb cannot pay in three seconds.

What we counted, and where these apps come from

On 30 August 2026 we pulled every iPhone app the US App Store returned for twelve screen-time search terms, read the listings by hand, and classified each one by what it actually does. 692 apps made the census. 511 of them, 73.8%, are app-level: the whole app is held shut. That is the shape most people picture when they say blocker, and it is also the shape with a lid you can lift, because the rule is one you set on yourself.

Two subsets exist precisely because that lid is liftable. 23 of the 692, 3.3%, use a physical object as the unlock: an NFC tag or card, a barcode, or a QR scan. Another 96, 13.9%, use what we tagged earn-to-unlock, where you complete a task, an exercise or a quest before an app will open. Neither is a different kind of block. Both are the same whole-app block with a harder door handle.

The 23 that move the unlock off the phone

The idea is old, and it is why the biscuit tin goes on top of the wardrobe. If the key is a plastic tag in another room, lifting the block costs a walk.

Those four have real user bases. The other nineteen run down to single-figure rating counts, and their keys are NFC tags, cards, stickers and tokens, barcode scans and QR scans.

Our recommendation, and we would rather you took it than bought a year of ours. Brick if you want to own the thing outright: $59.00 for the device, and its listing states "No subscriptions and no monthly fees". Unpluq if a keyring suits you better than a tile you have to remember to carry; its store lists a package at $30.00 with 3, 6 or 12-month options, including the physical tag. Both checked 30 August 2026, and either is a better answer to this problem than anything we sell.

The 96 that make you earn the way back in

The second group charges you in effort rather than in walking. Push-ups, steps, a stretch of time outdoors, flashcards, a chore you were avoiding. It is much the larger of the two groups, and it is where most of the recent building in this corner has gone.

Those sentences are quoted from each app's own listing, because that is what we classified on. We installed none of them, so nothing here is a review.

The honest caveat is that the price of entry is set by the developer rather than by you. Twenty push-ups is a real cost. Tapping a button labelled done is a speed bump. Check what the unlock actually demands before you commit.

Object or task, and how to tell which suits you

Pick the object if the relapses happen at home in the evening, because distance is the mechanism and distance is easy to arrange indoors. Pick the object too if you resent subscriptions, since this is the one corner of the category where a single purchase is normal. Pick the task if it happens anywhere, or if you will not carry hardware, which is most people.

One thing applies to both. They hold the whole app shut, so the group chat goes quiet along with the recommendations. If that is why you keep switching the tool off, read the next section. If it is not, stop here and buy one of the products above.

The narrow case where we are not the wrong answer

Two different sentences hide inside "I keep turning it off", and they need opposite tools.

The first: the block held and I broke it. That is everything above.

The second: the block was wrong, so I lifted it for a good reason and then stayed for forty minutes. Somebody needed an answer, the app was shut, you disabled the rule to reply, and the feed caught you on the way out. That tool did not fail for being too soft. It failed for being too coarse, and a harder unlock will make your week worse.

Common questions

Why does snowscroll not just add a hard lock?

Because a lock and a feed removal answer different problems, and bolting one onto the other would make us worse at ours without making us good at theirs. Our shield catches a habit tap and reroutes it; it is deliberately something you can undo, which is exactly why we keep telling this particular reader to buy hardware instead.

Do physical keys work, or do people leave the tag on the desk?

We have no data on that and neither does anyone else we can find, so treat a confident answer as marketing. What we can say is that the mechanism is distance, so it only works if the object ends up somewhere inconvenient. Keep the tag in the same pocket as the phone and you have bought a slower switch.

Can I run a hard blocker and snowscroll at the same time?

Yes. One acts on whether an app opens at all, the other on what loads once it has, and they do not compete for the same hook. Plenty of people want the strict tool on weekday mornings and something softer afterwards.

Which of the 23 should I actually buy?

Brick if you want hardware you own and no ongoing payment, Unpluq if a keyring suits your day better. The rest are very small and very new, which is not a judgement on quality, only a warning that you would be an early user.
